At about 7 am, Sai wakes up. His father is gone, hunting probably, and his mother is sleeping beside him. They are on the move, so they are somewhere in the southern hemisphere in the Pacific Ocean, nearing South America. They have made a temporary camp among some rocks and coral. He wakes his mother up and she grooms him. Afterward, Sai spends the morning making jewelry from shells, coral, and seaweed.
At around noon, Sai's father returns home. He brings with him a dolphin carcass. He and Sai's mother eat. Sai has already begun to feel afraid of his father. He chooses to wait and eat off the bones after his parents have eaten. Once they have eaten, the family leaves their home and continues their swimming. They don't have a true destination in mind. They are casually travelling the world, because their home is not safe for them and overrun with hunters.
The vast majority of the day, they do nothing but swim. Sai's father leads many hundreds of feet ahead, although he never gets out of their vision. Sai swims in the back, with his mother about thirty or forty feet ahead of him. He copies the graceful, dainty swipes of her paws through the water, trying to imitate her. He daydreams a lot.
It is just after six o'clock in the evening when they reach the coast of Ecuador. They swim inside of a sunken ship to make their home there for the night. Sai's father leaves immediately. His mother spends a few moments helping him catch fish to eat. Then, once he is fed, she leaves him alone as well to follow her mate.
Home alone, so to speak, Sai explores the ship. He finds lots of human clothes and accessories, mostly destroyed by the water, but he manages to find some that have survived and plays dress up in front of a mirror covered in barnacles. He is so absorbed in the game that he fails to notice when his parents return at about 8 o'clock.
Sai's father is furious to find him playing in human clothes, He tears him out of the cabin, scolding him. "Are you a human or a makoatl?" he asks.
Even though it is night time, Sai's family decides to move on, swimming through the night.
At about 1 o'clock in the morning, little Sai is too tired to continue any farther. He drops where he is, forcing his family to stop.
